The key aspects of the meditative state

This is one of my favourite postures to practice on the beach. My legs are in the lotus posture so it’s quite hard to balance on the knees alone. But in the sand it can sometimes make it a bit easier.

On the hard ground I mostly have to move my knees back and forth to stay balanced. Here on the beach in Bali on a short break between teaching days of our Yoga Synergy intensive course, I feel very meditative in this posture.

Key aspects of meditative state :
To achieve this you simply need to adapt each activity or exercise so that it is sustainable, engaging, invigorating, calming, while feeling effortless

  1. Sustainable – must be able to do the activity for a prolonged period of time
  2. Engaging – presence of coherent synchronous brain wave patterns, switching off of the time travelling centre of the brain and the ego centre. You feel connected, and not separate, to all things in the universe, in the present moment (with no sense of past of future)
  3. Invigorating – increased circulation of blood and lymph with low heart rate. This is associated with increased warmth and energy
  4. Calming – good balance of the autonomic nervous system with a natural dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system.
  5. Effortlessness – low minute ventilation, hardly any breathing at all, feels like there is hardly any required effort to do the activity

I am looking forward to teaching our next intensive Synergy training Retreat in Byron Bay (November 2019), Thailand (November/December 2019), Goa (February 2020), and South Italy (May 2020).
